Ode to Otl

odetootl

There’s only a few left of this great poster by pol.

In case you are wondering what the title means, Otl stands for Otl Aicher, the German graphic designer who created the pictograms as part of the graphic design programme for the 1972 Olympics in Munich. For more on Otl Aicher, check out this site, or this book.

Race 2 Replace

Still love these posters by Tavis Coburn done in 2006, when Discovery Channel was trying to figure out what to do post Lance Armstrong retiring. Of course, after ‘the comeback’, and post USADA, WADA, Travis Tygart, post Tyler Hamilton autobiography, post Oprah, we view this period of cycling history through a different lens, but back then Discovery Channel managed to make a whole series about the athletes who aimed to step out of Lance’s shadow. Coburn’s posters still rock.

Metzinger

metzinger_01

In the latest issue of Rouleur (Dec 2012) there is a review of a recent art show in Venice featuring the work of Jean Metzinger.

Metzinger was an artist at the turn of the 20th century, a contemporary of Cubists such as Picasso, Braque or Futurists such as Marinetti and Boccioni. Metzinger was drawn to the dynamism of cycling, and created several works depicting racing cyclists, both on the road and the track.

These are so far up my street they are practically knocking on my door asking for a cup of tea.

I created a series of 4 posters, called Stars of Track and Field, to celebrate British sporting achievement in 2012.

Each print depicts an athlete at a moment of transcendence, a moment of pure energy.
You can buy a limited edition print here.

Cancellara

I created this image using an iPad app I built called Triade. Spartacus had a disappointing season in 2012 after falling in the Ronde van Vlanderen and breaking his collarbone, and a crash in the Olympics road race meant he could not challenge Wiggins in the time trial.

Triade is available for iPad and also Android, find out more here.

Herne

Here are two great images from Christian Statham of Herne Hill velodrome. To my shame I’ve never actually been there.
